Hello!"£$%^& re Is there anyone out there?? I was really hoping for some help. My great, great grandparents Peacock Marshall and Ellen Hick lived at Bank Top in Terrington for a great number of years.  Could anyone tell me if it's still there and what it was like??  Peacock was a groom at Castle Howard although also a farmer and an agricultural labourer at various times in his life.

Peacock and Ellen, along with their daughter Sarah Dobson (Marshall) are buried in the churchyard at Terrington.  I have a photograph of the headstone but it's an old and very bad photograph and I can't read much of the inscription. Is there anyone who goes to church and would take some paper and a pencil with them to write it down for me? I can't tell you how grateful I would be.

Also the Hick family lived at North Ings Farm which, although the address is Sheriff Huitton is actually nearer to Terrington.  Would anyone be able be able to tell me anything at all about them?

I know I've asked an awful lot at one time but it's so quite here that I'm not even sure if anyone will see it but just in case someone does come along I thought I'd better get it all out at once!!!

This is a lovely website and I hope very much indeed that it takes off.  I know there must be an awful lot of people all over the world interested in Terrington!

All the best,
Val

I have put together a PDF file for you containing all the information about the headstones in the churchyard I could find. Just click the link below:

The History Group, as part of Terrington Arts, presented a summary of our findings from when we transcribed and took photos of the gravestones and memorials at All Saints' Church. Coincidentally, we commented on Peacock Marshall being an unusual name. Do you know the origin of it? We thought perhaps a mother's maiden name.

Bank Top, as the name suggests, is at the top of Terrington Bank. The property there is now called Flatt Top Farm. At the bottom of the Bank is North Ings Farm, so Peacock and Ellen were neighbours. I have no information on the Hicks family.

Best wishes,
Jules

Harry,

How can I ever thank you for all the wonderful information and the photographs? I am so very sorry for not visiting the board to find your post for so long, I've been busy moving to the Outer Hebrides so frustratingly things have taken a back seat for a while!

You mention Rev. Samuel Wimbush's diary, is the relevant passage about Ellen Marshall something there might be a transcript of?

I can't thank you enough for the effort you have gone to for me and it is truly greatly appreciated! I am definately not going anywhere at the moment and I promise any response will be replied to immediately!
All good wishes,
Val

Jules,

How wonderful that Terrington has a History Group, makes me long to be back in Yorkshire....one day!! You'll have seen from me reply to Harry above that we have just moved to the Outer Hebrides. Actually, it wasn't a big move, just from the Inner Hebrides & the Isle of Skye!

Yes, you are quite correct, Peacock's name was indeed his mother, Mary Peacock's, maiden name! She and Peacock's father were married in Nunnington in 1794.

How fascinating to know that Peacock & Ellen were neighbours to her parents. I wonder if perhaps it was likely the house could have been on her parents land? I know from census returns that their address was both West Moor, Bank Top and Flatt Top. They had the same neighbours so it would look to be the same place. Do you think they would have lived in a property that has since been demolished?
All good wishes,
Val

Dear All, I need to ask your help again!!  I'm sure someone will turn up one of these times and I can't say a word being so long replying!!

Peacock and Ellen Marshall had a son called Richard who emigrated to Canada in 1886.  He became head landscape gardener at Queen's Park which is in front of the Parliament building in Toronto.  There is a museum there who has a file on him which includes several fascinating photographs.  They have very graciously sent me copies and have given me permission to pass copies along to Terrington History Group if they would be interested.

In the meantime amongst these photographs is one of the house at Bank Top in Terrington where Peacock and Ellen lived and brought up their children.  I just can't believe it!!  Below you will find a copy of this photograph and I wonder if there is anyone who recognizes the house???  We're trying to date it but as the children's clothes don't really say anything apart from Victorian and the lady at the gate is so small it's very hard. I would be so grateful for and thoughts or ideas!!

Do hope someone comes along soon but, right now, I bet you're all enjoying the beautiful weather!!
All the best,
Val

Val

Hope you're still checking - only just found the correspondence. I have worked with Julie on the History group.

I can give you a few quotes from the Wimbush diaries re Peacock Marshall, tho' I'd rather not waste Harry's site with the details. Don't get excited - they aren't very revealing! You can get me at terrington.arts@btinternet.com

I  can also confirm that they lived in what is now Flat Top Cottage. Its the house facing the top of Terrington South Bank, where it forms a T junction with Terrington Bank about a mile West of the village.

Emigration to Canada was no surprise - farming at the time was in a mess and a lot of people emigrated, especially to Canada as there seemed to be no future around here

Regards
